Since its first edition in 1992 in Arc-et-Senans (France) the NFO series of conferences has provided a well focused forum for discussing near-field optics, from its fundamental principles to its numerous applications in physics, chemistry, life science, information technology, environmental and material sciences. Each edition of the conference has seen new facets of this field of research emerge and develop; the 2006 edition will certainly not disappoint us.

Lausanne by the lake of Geneva

After extremely successful 7th and 8th editions in Rochester (U.S.A.) and Seoul (Korea), the conference comes to the heart of Europe: Lausanne (Switzerland), where it will be held from September 10 to 15, 2006.

The conference is organized by the Nanophotonics & Metrology Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). Situated in the French part of Switzerland, not far from Geneva, EPFL is an extremely dynamic polytechnic university which brings together on its campus almost 10'000 people from 107 different nationalities.

Vineyards by Lausanne and the lake of Geneva

Located between the lake and the vineyards, with the Alps as backdrop, Lausanne has a very long history which is still present in several beautiful buildings. These include the Gothic cathedral which dominates the old town. The city is extremely well connected to the rest of Switzerland and beyond. It provides a fantastic base from which to explore this part of the world, from the highest summits of the Alps (Mont-Blanc in Chamonix, Matterhorn in Zermatt), to exciting cities such as Paris or Milan which are only a couple of hours away by train.

Away from mega-events that touch on too many topics with zillions of parallel sessions, NFO-9 will provide a well focused conference on near-field optics, nanophotonics and plasmonics. With a relaxed - although very professional - atmosphere it will bring together key scientists from all around the world to exchange ideas and discuss their most recent results. Don’t miss out on this opportunity.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to Lausanne!
